The Los Angeles Maritime Institute is an educational non-profit organization that provides youth with opportunities to sail aboard the tall ships Irving Johnson and Exy Johnson. These sail training experiences use the power of sails to help students develop their skills in leadership, teamwork and personal growth.

AltaSea
The Port of Los Angeles is currently developing a world-class urban marine research and innovation center called AltaSea on the LA Waterfront in San Pedro. This project will bring together government, business, marine science and philanthropy to address critical ocean-related issues such as climate change and sea level rise.
AltaSea will include circulating sea-water labs, classrooms, offices, lecture halls and support facilities as well as an interpretive center and a facility for marine-related commercial ventures. The entire campus will be built over a 15- to 20-year timeframe, with the cost estimated at more than $500 million.
A New Home for Marine Science in the City of San Pedro
The Southwest Harbor Marine Terminal (Berths 56-60 and 70-71) at the Port of Los Angeles is being leased by the Port to be transformed into the world-class AltaSea marine research and innovation campus, which will be an unprecedented collaboration among government, business, philanthropy and marine science. This will be a nexus for research on ocean-related problems that are critical to Southern California and the world.
This research will help improve the health and safety of the ocean and its inhabitants, as well as provide solutions to many important marine challenges, such as global climate change, invasive species, and sustainable fisheries. This project will generate thousands of construction and professional jobs that will create a significant economic impact in the region.
A Sense of Community
The community in San Pedro is a very tight-knit and cohesive one. Everyone knows each other, and it’s not uncommon to run into a familiar face anywhere you go.
Downtown San Pedro is full of nightlife, museums and restaurants. It is the hub of San Pedro, and is a wonderful place to visit with your family or friends.
There is also a lot of cultural diversity in the area, with many restaurants representing various cultures, including Italian, Croatian and Mexican. This has been a huge draw for people from different countries who have moved to the area over the years.
