How to Unclog a Clogged Kitchen Drain

The kitchen is the most used area of your home and when it becomes clogged, it can be a huge hassle to deal with. Often, a clogged sink will cause you to delay your meals and household chores, but the issue can be addressed quickly and easily.

Whether you have a single sink or double ones, a clogged kitchen drain can become a serious issue, and you should fix it immediately. If left untreated, a clogged drain can lead to more serious plumbing issues that can affect your life in the long run.

Some of the most common clogs that can occur in a kitchen sink are caused by foods that react with water to expand. This is the case with pasta, rice and potatoes, which can cause a clog when they’re left to soak in water for a long period of time.

Grease clogs are also a common culprit in kitchen sinks. These clogs are hard to remove because the grease sticks to the sides of your pipes, keeping other food waste from flowing freely down the drain.

A good way to prevent clogged drains is to avoid pouring cooking fats or grease down the drain. The grease can actually harden and solidify inside your pipes, forming a tougher blockage that’s difficult to remove. Instead, pour off the grease into a container, like a can of butter, so it doesn’t clog your sink.

Baking soda and hot water can also help unclog a clogged sink by creating a fizzy reaction that breaks up the stubborn blockage. Simply pour about a cup of baking soda down the drain and then follow it up with a cup of hot water. You can use a rubber spatula or plastic utensil to push the baking soda down the drain.

Another great way to unclog your sink is to use a plumber’s snake. A professional snake is best, but if you don’t have one handy, you can create your own with a wire coat hanger and some needle-nose pliers.

The wire should have a hook on the end, which you’ll use to grab onto anything that’s blocking the waste tee and baffle. Once you have the hanger hooked on the baffle, push it down into the drain and twist it to dislodge any debris that’s stuck in there.

Using baking soda and vinegar can also help unclog your drains. The baking soda will react with the vinegar to form a chemical reaction that loosens the clog, making it easier to remove.

If the clog still persists, call a plumber to diagnose and repair the problem. They’ll inspect the pipe network to find out where the blockage is coming from and ensure the issue doesn’t happen again in the future.

Other ways to clear a clogged kitchen sink are to run cold water or run the garbage disposal, according to Plumbing Advisor. Running the disposal will break up any small particles that have accumulated in the drain, which should make it easier to get rid of the clog and prevent further issues.
